Helen Garcia’s breast cancer fight to keep her from attending Sept. 8 benefit

Preparations are continuing for a Sept. 8 spaghetti dinner and silent auction to help Helen Garcia, a Grafton, N.D.-area native and East Grand Forks resident who’s battling breast cancer.

Garcia, 50, won’t be able to attend, though. She’ll be in suburban Chicago, Ill., where she’ll be recouperating from surgery to remove the malignant tumor in one of her breasts.

Helen Garcia

Helen Garcia, 50, of East Grand Forks, Minn. She is a native of the Grafton, N.D., area.

Garcia has not worked since June at LM Wind Power, her employer of about five years.

She first discovered a hard lump in one of her breasts during a routine self-examination in March.

Helen is the mother of 6 children, all adults. Her husband, Juan DeDios Garcia, himself has had health issues since one of his kidneys failed and he received a kidney transplant almost five years ago.

The benefit for Helen is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Southgate Casino Bar & Grill, 2525 S. Washington St., Grand Forks. There is a free-will offering for the meal.

Organizers are continuing to accept silent auction donations. If you’re able to help, please call Jodi at (218) 242-0217.
